Qatar- Dentists prepare for Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland qualifications

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Hamad Medical Corporation's (HMC) Hamad Dental Center, in co-operation with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), recently organised two intensive workshops to help prepare dentists to complete the requirements for the College's Faculty of Dentistry (MFD) membership examination and specialist pediatric dentistry fellowship (FFD) qualification.

The preparatory workshops were held under the supervision of Dr Ghanim Al Mannai, Dental Service Chairman and Senior Consultant Endodontics at HMC. Held for the fifth time in Qatar, the workshops are part of a long-term agreement between HMC and RCSI that was developed to offer specialized dentistry training to Qatar-based dentists interested in furthering their education and advancing their pediatric dental qualifications.

'Working with prestigious international institutions like RCSI to hold training programs for our dentists is evidence of Hamad Dental Center's commitment to providing the best possible care to each and every one of our patients. We also offer dentists from the public and private sectors the opportunity to attend these intensive training courses and obtain internationally-recognized certificates. There is a growing demand from local dentists to enroll in our programs year after year, said Dr Al Mannai.

Dr Khalifa Ali Al Ansari, Senior Consultant and Vice Chairman of Education, Hamad Dental Center, said the five-day workshop is designed to help clinicians refine their knowledge in all aspects of the dentistry profession.
'The intensive training course was held in February with 74 dentists from the public and private sectors participating. The program is designed to help clinicians refine their knowledge in all aspects of the dentistry profession and aims to prepare them to pass the admittance tests for membership into the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (MFD and FFD examinations). The next intake for these programs is in October. As part of the workshops, professors from RCSI presented on a range of scientific subjects related to dental surgery and participants obtained 20 CPD points, said Dr Al Ansari.

Dr  Al Ansari added that dentists who have enrolled in the preparatory workshops held in recent years have achieved a high level of success in their MFD examination, with many having joined the specialized pediatric dentistry fellowship program offered in co-operation with the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland. He added that the internationally-accredited RCSI MFD postgraduate dental education program allows Qatar-based dentists to receive specialized training in Qatar, permitting them to obtain accreditation from a well-known international institution without the requirement to travel abroad.

Dr Jamal Al Abdullah, Chief of Pedodontics, Head of the Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program at HMC, said the training included specialized courses and enabled eleven residents to prepare for the Irish Fellowship Diploma examination, which will take place in April 2020. Each year, four Qatari dentists are accepted into the program and in the coming years there are plans to extend enrolment to the children of long-term residents and international students.

'We have agreed to partner with Weill Cornell MedicineQatar and Sidra Medicine to encourage post-graduate dentistry students to continue their studies as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen our resources in this field and to support these professionals in passing the RCSI examinations. The internationally-accredited Postgraduate Dental Education Program offered by HMC in collaboration with RCSI is in line with Qatar's National Oral Health Strategy, added Dr Al Abdullah.

Professor Albert Leung, Dean Elect of the Faculty of Dentistry, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, praised the level of service provided by the Hamad Dental Center and applauded HMC for its efforts to make the specialized training provided by his organization available in Qatar.

As part of the five-day training program, several dentists who obtained membership into the Faculty of Dentistry (MFD) last year were recognised during a ceremony held in the presence of Professor Leung, Dr Al Ansari, and Dr Al Abdullah.
