Qatar- 7th GOPAC Conference reviews anti-corruption efforts


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Participants in the first session of the 7th Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption Conference, which began today in Doha, said that fighting corruption has become a difficult endeavor in light of the rapid technological changes. 
The participants in the session, which focused on Promoting Good Governance and stepping up Sustainable Development Goals, corruption has become a drain on the budgets of countries. They added that it also has severe social, political and economic repercussions.
They shed light on the role their parliaments play in combating the phenomenon of corruption through legislation and legal frameworks that punish the engagement in corruption and pushes for further international agreements on that front. 
They also stressed the importance of having strong parliaments that share information with relevant institutions and organizations, and help create an environments for investment and justice that contributes to the advancement of peoples through the constitutional powers that their parliaments enjoy. They noted that the parliaments of many poor countries have limited powers that hinders their ability to have the proper oversight. 
The participating parliamentarians stressed on the important role education can play in combatting terrorism, empowering women and youth, promoting justice, achieving transparency, and enhancing trust between citizens and government institutions to confront the plague of corruption, noting that the lack of integrity, transparency, and good governance worsened the conditions in many countries.
Member of the Shura Council Abdullah bin Fahd bin Ghorab Al Marri said that the failure of governments and representatives of peoples to fight corruption and promote good governance leads to a loss of confidence and eventually to demonstrations that demand fighting corruption and promoting good governance. He noted that this entails great risks such as loss of life, and property among other things. 
He added that the people in Qatar were comfortable with the efforts of government in fighting corruption. He noted that Qatar occupies high international rankings in the indices dedicated to corruption. He stressed that this is thanks to the wise policy of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. 
Al Marri then discussed the concept of good governance, noting that there was no definition for it. He also discussed the many negative repercussions of corruption on countries. 
Meanwhile member of the Shura Council Ali bin Abdullatif Al Misnad stressed the importance of the conference and the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption in the fight against corruption. He noted that the organization's long-term strategy helps enhance coordination between governments and the private sector. He called on the participants to look into the Qatari experience in fighting corruption as it could prove instructive to many.
