Culled crocodile had human remains in stomach

(MENAFN- Asia Times) A crocodile caught and killed in Sarawak, Malaysia is suspected to have been responsible for the disappearance of an Indonesian migrant worker after an examination found human remains in its stomach.

On March 17, villagers from Bintangor captured and culled the 14-foot crocodile on a riverbank of Sungai Stubah, the China Press reported.

The villagers filed a report to the Police after human remains were found inside the reptile's stomach.

Officers from the Sarawak Forestry Corporation and Tanjung Manis Fire and Rescue Department later took away the carcass .

Body parts recovered from the crocodile's stomach will be sent for DNA analysis, said Zolkipli Mohamad Aton, chief executive officer of the Sarawak Forestry Corporation.

Previously a Swift Wildlife Action Team had been dispatched to the area to mount a search for the reptile following the disappearance of a plantation worker on March 9.

At 4pm that day, while Indonesian worker Yosep Tefa was showering in the river with compatriots, he was reportedly attacked and dragged away by a crocodile.

The corporation also reminded the public not to take matters into their own hands, as doing so is extremely dangerous. Members of the public who see crocodiles in their area should notify the nearest corporation or Sarawak Forest Department office.
