UAE- RTA sets Guinness World Record in compiling biggest awareness message 


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has achieved a Guinness World Recordbycompilingthebiggest awareness messageusingLego Blocks.

Eng.MaithabinAdai, CEO ofRTA's Traffic and Roads Agencyreceived a certificate to this effect from the office of Guinness Records Book at the site of the event in Dubai Festival City.Eng.Maithaparticipated withstudents and shoppers in placing Lego Blocks in the plaquereflecting the awareness message:'Your Life isworth morethan a phone call.'

"The underlying objective of this achievement is to send aloud & clear awareness message to motorists cautioning them against the risks of using of using phones while driving. Traffic studies indicate that the probability of traffic accidentswhere motorists are usingmobilephoneswhile driving is four times higher thanthose not using it," saidMaitha.

"We were keen to ensure that thisawareness message is creative, attractive and has a globalimplication. Itisintended to serve theDubai Traffic Safety Strategyendorsed by HisHighnessSheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin RashidAl Maktoumthis year,comprising four pillars highlighted by traffic safety. This event contributes to achieving RTA's KPIintraffic safety and(0)fatalityper 100,000 ofthepopulation. During the period 2008-2015, we have managed to reduce the fatality rate of traffic accidents byas much as 82%. The raterecededby22% during 2015-2017. Overall, the traffic fatality ratedippedfrom 21.7 cases per 100,000ofthepopulationin 2007to 2.5 cases per 100,000 ofthepopulationlast year (2017).

"The Agency has coordinated with Guinness Office in Dubaito ensurethe procedures of registering a new world record that servesthe trafficawareness programmesand reduces traffic-related fatalities and injuries.Indicators revealthat using the phone whiledriving maybe a direct contributor tothe majority oftraffic accidents. The use ofmobilephone during driving is equivalent to driving underthe influenceof alcohol and drugs.Theresponse ofmotorists usingmobilephoneis delayed by50% compared to the response of driversnot using phones while driving," explainedMaitha.

"The awareness message "YourLifeworth more than a phone call"reflects inshort and strongwords the risks of using the mobile phone to the life of the driver as well as road users.More than 20,000 Lego Blocks were used to write the awareness message in both Arabicand English. About 140,000 Lego Blocks were used to make the plaque at the site of the event.

"The key awarenessactivities heldin Dubai Festival Cityinvolved theparticipation ofthe publicandstudentsinvited to insert the Lego blocks in place to complete the awareness message. Giftswere distributedalong with an educative leaflet narrating in a concise & scientific way the risks of usingthephonewhile driving," addedMaitha.

During theevent,RTA provided a driving simulator offering driving training in a virtualenvironment,which was well received by visitors of the center who also completed surveys reflecting their satisfaction with the event.
