UNSC reaffirms support to search for missing Kuwaitis in Iraq

(MENAFN - Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW YORK, Aug 8 (KUNA) -- Members of the UN Security Council on Wednesday reiterated their support for the ongoing efforts of the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) and the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Iraq (SRSG) Jan Kubis.
The Council members welcomed the completion of the electoral recount and call on all Iraqi political entities to work together towards the formation of an inclusive, non-sectarian and pro-reform government that will ensure national unity, sovereignty and independence for Iraq.
The Council welcomed the role of women's participation in these efforts.
The Council members noted ongoing efforts to address water and electricity management and southern Iraq in response to the popular demand of the Iraqi people.
They also noted on going demining efforts in Iraq by the United Nations Mine Action Service.
The Council appreciated the role of UNAMI and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in execution of their mandate in accordance with the relevant Security Council resolutions pertaining to missing Kuwaiti and third country nationals as well as the missing Kuwaiti property, including the national archive.
The Council continues to encourage Iraq and Kuwait to intensify their efforts to reinvigorate the process and bring to an end this humanitarian issue.
Council members highlighted the importance of accountability to strengthen the rule of law and Iraq. The Council members underscored their support for special adviser Karim Khan and the Establishment of his team. (pickup previous)
