Maid sent home from Jeddah for not knowing English

(MENAFN- Asia Times) A Filipino domestic worker in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, was sent home by her employer because she could not speak or understand English.

The domestic worker named Joan, who went to Saudi Arabia in late January, said she only studied until second grade because of poverty, GMA News reported.

Joan said in Tagalog that she could not speak or understand a single word of English, saying that she could not answer a question as simple as 'How are you?'

The "maid", whose age is not known, decided to work overseas because her former partner is now in jail for drug-related charges.

She said she was able to apply for a job overseas with the help of her recruiter despite not knowing English. The recruiter only asked her to sign her employment papers.

Nasser Mustafa, head of the Philippine Overseas Labor Office in Riyadh, urged employment agencies to thoroughly screen their applicants as some Filipino domestic workers could not perform household chores properly, while some were minors.
