Fakhoury partakes in World Summit of Governments in Dubai

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) AMMAN — Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Imad Fakhoury participated in the World Summit of Governments where he chaired the global council for the 8th sustainable development goal (SDG) 2030, a Planning Ministry statement said on Tuesday.

The minister was invited as a keynote speaker in a number of sessions to outline Jordan's development expertise and the country's roadmap to achieving the SDG objectives.

Fakhoury also spoke about exchanging expertise at the governmental level to explore the changes needed regarding the role of governments in light of the rapid technological revolution, the fourth industrial revolution and changing citizen expectations in the 21st century, according to the statement.

The summit, held under the patronage of UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, was attended by more than 4,000 people from 140 countries, while 130 speakers took part in 120 interactive sessions.

Fakhoury stressed that SDG 8 focuses on achieving comprehensive and sustainable growth and quality job opportunities, in line with international labour standards that ensure the rights of workers. He emphasised the overlap and interdependence between the eighth goal and the 16 others, the statement said.

On the sidelines of the summit, the minister took part in the global policy platform titled "Innovation in Partnerships to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals" where he said that, during the first 10 years of the millennium, Jordan achieved real economic growth of 6.5 per cent annually.

However, he noted that the growth rate has dropped since 2011 due to regional crises and the hosting of 1.3 million Syrian refugees, which has cost Jordan $1.5 billion a year, hindering the efforts to achieve the agenda's goals, according to the statement.

Fakhoury also participated in the meeting of Arab ministers involved with the International Monetary Fund.

He also held a number of meetings including one with Chairman of Abu Dhabi's Department of Economic Development Saif Mohammed Al Hajeri, Chairman of the Department of Economic Development of Dubai Sami Gamzi, and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank Vice President for Policy and Strategy Affairs Joachim von Amsberg.

He also met with delegations from donor countries to Jordan, and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, the statement concluded.
