UN observes International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian People


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) New York, Nov.29 (Petra) -- The United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday will observe the annual International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, pursuant to its resolution 32/40 B of December, 2 1977.

The UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRP), will hold a session, during which a number of participants and speakers announce their solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Speakers at the session will include, chairman of CEIRP, who is also Senegal envoy, President of the General Assembly, President of the Security Council, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Permanent Observer of the State of Palestine, who will read out a message of the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on this occasion.

The international body is also scheduled to adopt today six resolutions against Israel, part of its annual ritual of enacting 20 Arab-sponsored resolutions singling out the Jewish state.

The resolutions are under the titles Division for Palestinian Rights of the Secretariat, Special Information Program on the Question of Palestine of the Department of Public Information of the Secretariat, Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, Peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine, and a resolution addressing "Jerusalem". Another two resolutions will also be adopted the first addresses "Jerusalem", while the other one calls on Israel to transfer control of the Golan Heights to Syria.

Today's occasion marks the adoption by the General Assembly of resolution 181 (II) on 29 November 1947 partitioning the mandate of Palestine into two States.

The CEIRP was established in 1975 pursuant to General Assembly Resolution 3376, with a mandate to advise the General Assembly on programs to enable Palestinian people to exercise their inalienable rights, including the right to self-determination without external interference, the right to national independence and sovereignty, and the right to return to their homes and property from which they have been displaced. CEIRP's mandate has been renewed on an annual basis since, most recently pursuant to General Assembly Resolution 71/20.
