Putin, Trump discuss Syria peace efforts


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) MOSCOW, Nov 21 (KUNA) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump discussed by phone on Tuesday the joint efforts to find a peaceful settlement to the conflict in Syria and win the war against terrorism.

The conversation took place after Putin's talks with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad; it highlighted the need to end the fighting in Syria as per the UN Security Council Resolution 2254 and the outcomes of the Astana talks between the Syrian government and opposition groups.

President Putin reaffirmed commitment to the Joint Statement, he signed with President Trump on the margins of the summit meeting of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Da Nang, Vietnam, on November 11, according to a Kremlin statement.

President Putin stressed the need that a political settlement to the Syrian crisis should ensure the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity, noting the Russian initiative for hosting a Syrian national dialogue in Sochi aims to reach a framework agreement on the negotiating process.

He briefed President Trump on the outcome of his talks with President Al-Assad in Sochi where the latter affirmed commitment to the political process, the statement said.

On the Russian-Turkish-Iranian summit meeting, due in Sochi tomorrow Wednesday, President Putin told his US peer that the summit aims to coordinate the efforts of the three countries on how to settle the Syrian crisis peacefully.

Regarding the combat against terrorism, both leaders expressed satisfaction with successful US-Russia enhanced de-confliction efforts that have dramatically accelerated the losses of the so-called Islamic State (IS) group in recent months.

They agreed to continue military cooperation to eradicate terrorism, the statement pointed out.

They also discussed other regional issues of common concern, including the situations in the Korean Peninsula, Ukraine and Afghanistan as well as the nuclear deal between Iran and the P5+1 group. (end) as.gb
