Qatar highlights threat from Weapons of Mass Destruction

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The State of Qatar reiterated its concern about the dangers of terrorist outfits acquiring Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs) that poses a threat to peace and security in the region and the world.
Affirming its belief that sustainable peace and stability in the world cannot be achieved while the possession of Weapons of Mass Destruction continues, Qatar called on all to unite efforts to promote development and achieve economic and humanitarian prosperity for peoples which should be a priority at all levels.
This came in a statement delivered by a member of Qatar's delegation, Maha Mohammed al-Nisf, participating in the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, before the Assembly's First Committee on the subject ‘Other Weapons of Mass Destruction'.
Qatar reiterated in the statement the importance of intensifying joint efforts to prevent extremist terrorist organisations from acquiring such weapons in accordance with Security Council resolution 1540 (2004).
It states that nuclear, chemical and biological weapons posed a threat to international peace and security, and decided that all member states shall refrain from providing any form of support to non-state actors that attempt to acquire, manufacture, possess, transport, transfer or use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons.
The statement pointed out that in line with Qatar's policy on the elimination of Weapons of Mass Destruction and the fight against terrorism, it continues to work with its partners in the international community in this regard and implements its international legal obligations in preventing the proliferation of these weapons, including chemical, biological and nuclear weapons.
This is based on being a party to the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on their Destruction and the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction in addition to nuclear Non-Proliferation treaties.
The past decades, the statement said, have shown that WMDs constitute an imminent danger to humanity and this has prompted the international community to work to avoid the dangers that may result from the indiscriminate use of such weapons through the adoption of international instruments aimed at eliminating these weapons.
