AMMAN —AlGhad— Talks on the reopening of the ‘Nusseib' border crossing with the Southern Front armed faction of the Syrian opposition have been suspended, pending suggestions by the Deraa Governorate Council, according to Raed Radi, leader of the Fallujah Houran Faction. Recommendations for the reopening were handed last Thursday, Radi confirmed to AlGhad, but given the Front's refusal, parties of the negotiation look to the Council to suggest middle-ground solutions for the reopening.
The Jordanian proposition for the reopening entailed that employees of the Syrian government run the civic operation, from passport processing to entry procedures.
Meanwhile, the Front's forces would handle military security operations from Bab al Maabar to Khirbet Ghazaleh, to secure safe passage.
An 'acceptable solution is yet to be established, according to Radi, who says that all Syrian factions should be included in the border reopening decision.
As for the terms of the opposition, they include flying the revolution banners, instead of the official national flag, and that the entire point should not be under any authority of the regime.
Instead, the opposition suggests that the border point be under the full authority of the Deraa Council or the Free Syrian Army, under EU oversight.
Chief among the opposition's conditions is addressing the thousands of detainees, whose whereabouts are unknown.
Also a point of interest to the opposition is the revenue from running the border crossing and clearance operation.
Pending the response of the opposition's coalition and the Deraa Council, no other alternatives have been presented.
Hopes are that the Council may provide a suitable alternative to the points of dispute within the upcoming few days.
