Kuwait- US welcomes Saudi decision allowing women to drive

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, Sept 26 (KUNA) -- The US said on Tuesday that it is "very happy" with Saudi Arabia's decision allowing women to drive, saying it is a step in the "right direction." State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert told reporters "we're certainly happy to hear that. If Saudi women are now able to drive, certainly here in the United States, we would certainly welcome that." "I think it's a great step in the right direction for that country," she added.

Nauert reiterated: "we're just happy today with the steps that they are taking, and I think that that is a very positive sign." Earlier today, Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud issued an order allowing women to have driving licences.

In a Supreme Order, relayed by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), King Salman addressed the Minister of Interior to "adopt the application of the provisions of the Traffic Law and its Executive Regulations - including the issuance of driving licenses - to both males and females." A high-level ministerial committee will be formed to study the necessary arrangements for enforcing the order that to be implemented as of June 2018. (end) si.msa
