Driving pains: Australia opens probe into Uber working conditions

(MENAFN- Asia Times)

Complaints to Australian workplace regulator Ombudsman have prompted yet another investigation into Uber's employment practices.

A spokesman for regulator was quoted as saying it had "commenced an investigation into Uber, with the purpose of determining whether the engagement of Uber drivers is compliant with Commonwealth workplace laws". The group representing Uber drivers is asking for employment rights for those who work 35 or more hours a week.

If a UK workplace tribunal decision last October gives any indication of which way the Australian agency will lean, it is a bad sign for Uber. The UK ruling found that Uber drivers should have access to minimum wage, sick pay and paid holidays.
