Opposition accuses regime of committing new massacre in Damascus Countryside

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) GENEVA, March 25 (KUNA) -- Head of the Syrian opposition delegation at peace talks in Geneva Nasr Hariri Saturday accused the Syrian regime and its allies of committing a new massacre against civilians at a market in Damascus Countryside.

During a press conference after meeting with UN special envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura earlier today, Hariri said the regime also targeted a mosque and a church in Hamoriah, as well as bombing a hospital in Latmanah with chemical substances, which resulted in many injuries and the death of a doctor.

The "grotesque" massacre in Hamoriah, in addition to others in Hama countryside were nothing but "hysterical escalation by the regime in fear of international pressure towards a political solution," noted Hariri.

He attributed the move to the fact that the regime was aware that any step towards a political solution meant its fall.

Hariri also urged all parties with influence over the regime to have a "constructive" role on the political track, based on UN resolution 2254.

The fifth round of intra-Syrian negotiations began on March 23 and is due until April 1.

Parties are discussing implementation of UN resolution 2254, the ruling system, new constitution, UN-supervised elections and fighting terrorism.

The Syrian government delegation insists on putting the fight against terrorism on top of the agenda, while opposition wanted to discuss terrorism in parallel with political transition. (pickup previous) ta.hb
