Tunisian ruling party MPs resign amid internal rifts

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Thirty-one parliamentarians from Tunisia’s ruling Nidaa Tounes party presented their resignations en masse to the assembly speaker on Monday amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the party.
“We… tender our resignations from the Nidaa Tounes parliamentary bloc to Parliamentary Speaker Mohamed Nasser” they declared in a joint statement without providing further explanation.
The same group of MPs suspended their membership in the assembly one week ago amid rumors of serious internecine rifts within the party’s leadership.
Nidaa Tounes which currently holds a majority in Tunisia’s parliament is a relatively new political party.
Politician Beji Caid Essebsi established the party in June 2012 going on to win presidential polls two years later.
Essebsi’s subsequent resignation from Nidaa Tounes late last year however has reportedly triggered a host of internal disputes over the party’s decision-making process.
Nidaa Tounes is currently scheduled to hold a party congress at which it is expected to issue internal bylaws but the date of the event remains subject to dispute.
The inter-party conflict reportedly pits supporters of party secretary-general Mohsen Marzouk against those of Hafez Essebsi the party’s deputy chairman and the son of President Essebsi.
Marzouk’s supporters accuse the younger Essebsi of seeking to “inherit” the party’s leadership from his father.
