Syria blasts EU statement on presidential elections

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday slammed as "flagrant violation of the international law" the recent EU statement deeming the Tuesday presidential elections as illegitimate. "The Syrian government is astonished by the EU's statement" on the Syrian presidential elections which led to the reelection of President Bashar Al-Assad to a third seven-year term in office after winning 88.7 percent of votes, the ministry said in a press release. "The EU statement runs counter to the provisions of the international law on respect for sovereignty of states and non-interference in their domestic affairs," it affirmed. "The statement violates the simplest rules of democracy and disregards the people's right to choose their leaders and chart their road map through ballot boxes," the ministry added. In a related development, Deputy Foreign Minister Dr. Faisal Miqdad said the elections dealt a strong blow to the foreign-backed terrorism. "The ultimate priority of the state in the wake of the elections is to continue the combat against terrorism and speed up the reconciliation process through political dialogue in order to resolve the current crisis," he added. Soon after the election committee announced the results of the presidential polls on Wednesday, June 4, the EU slammed the polls as illegitimate, saying they "undermine the political efforts to find a solution to this horrific conflict. "Any elections in Syria should only take place within the framework of a genuine political process agreed by the international community," it stressed.
