RC44 Championship Tour final leg in Oman


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The RC44 Championship Tour, one of the most competitive and respected events in the international yacht racing circuit, will make its second appearance in Oman later this year.


Confirming the development, Salma al Hashmi, Oman Sail's director of communications, told Muscat Daily, ''Yes, it is happening. We are just waiting for written confirmation from the concerned authorities in Oman to give the final go-ahead. We are looking forward to hosting one of the most prestigious sailing events in the world.''


According to the official website of the Tour, the final leg of the five-stop championship - the RC44 Oman Cup - is scheduled to be held in Muscat from November 19-23.


The Oman Sail headquarters at The Wave, Muscat will host the event where the teams are expecting north-easterly winds during that time of the year, providing good sailing conditions.


The RC44 Championship Tour was launched in 2007 and made its maiden voyage to Oman last year when Oman Sail hosted the opening leg of the Tour in Muscat from January 30-February 3, 2013.


Buoyed by the Tour's success last year that brought together superpowers from the world of sailing and global business and had amateur owners race

Alongside the biggest names in the sport, Oman Sail is looking forward to hosting another successful event.


Nine of the 14-team fleet, all in one-design boats designed by five-time America's Cup winner and sailing legend Russell Coutts, started the 2014 season by competing in the first leg in the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda,

Virgin Gorda in British Virgin Islands from February 12-16.


It was also the first time the RC44 was held in Virgin Gorda.


Defending champion Team Aqua, owned by Chris Bake, started the new season in style, winning the opening leg.


RC44 class founder Coutts said, ''We have some great venues lined up and the competition within the fleet is phenomenal. The class is growing stronger every year.''


The fleet will now travel across the Atlantic to Europe where the teams will compete in three European events in Cascais, Portugal, in Sotogrande, Spain and then in Marstrand, Sweden.


In Marstrand, the event will also double up as the classes' world championships before the fleet crosses 4,000 nautical miles to reach Muscat for the final event of the season.


RC44 schedule: April 23-27, Cascais, Portugal; June 25-29, Sotogrande, Spain; August 13-17 Marstrand, Sweden; November 19-23 Muscat, Oman.
