(MENAFN- Jordan Times) Several Jafer and Southern Badia residents staged a sit-in on Sunday in front of the phosphate mines in Shidiyeh, demanding jobs.
Protesters put up a tent at the entrance to the mines, demanding that the Jordan Phosphate Mines Company hire them and urging the government to respond to their calls.
Maan Deputy Governor Hamed Tarawneh met with the protesters and urged them to be patient, citing difficult economic conditions and stressing the government's commitment to provide jobs for unemployed Jordanians.
Last week, several representatives of these protesters met with Maan Governor Abdul Karim Rawajfeh and handed him a memorandum listing their demands, which he said, the governorate submitted to the concerned parties.
Jafer and Southern Badia residents have staged several sit-ins last year and earlier this year demanding jobs.
Also on Sunday, day labourers at the agricultural directorates in the southern Governorate of Karak, 140km south of Amman, protested against the ministry for "neglecting" their calls to be hired as permanent staff.
More than 100 workers at the directorates are asking for permanent work contracts.
In Irbid Governorate, 80km north of the capital, workers at public institutions who are hired on daily basis demanded that their salaries be increased to JD190, in accordance with the Labour Law.
The day labourers said their pay is "very low", noting that some of them receive less than JD100 a month. They urged the ministry and the Social Security Corporation to follow up on their issue.
