Suspect in U.S. Brown University Shooting Arrested

(MENAFN) A suspect has been taken into custody following Saturday's deadly campus shooting at Brown University that claimed two lives and left nine others injured.

Benjamin Erickson, 24, was apprehended Sunday morning in relation to the attack, media reported, according to three senior law enforcement officials. Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez Jr. informed the outlet that investigators have strong confidence Erickson is the shooter, although formal charges remain pending.

The violence erupted Saturday at Barus & Holley, an engineering and physics facility located on Brown's campus in Providence, officials confirmed. Investigators continue examining Erickson's background, with particular focus on his mental health records and any ties he may have to the institution.

Perez stated that investigators are coordinating with the Rhode Island attorney general's office to satisfy all legal prerequisites before filing charges.

"This is complex," Perez said, citing the volume of evidence and number of witnesses. He said police cannot hold Erickson beyond Monday unless charges are brought, adding that authorities hope an arraignment will take place "sooner rather than later."

Public records examined by media reveal that Erickson was most recently based in Washington, D.C., with prior residence in Wisconsin. Preliminary background checks yielded no criminal history.

The report also said Erickson served in the US Army as an infantryman from May 2021 until November 2024.
