Toyota Halts Car Production In Brazil After Storm Devastation
(MENAFN- The Rio Times) Toyota halted vehicle production in Brazil after a violent storm tore through its Porto Feliz engine plant on September 22, 2025.
The storm sent wind gusts up to 95 km/h and ripped off the plant's metal roof, exposing production lines to torrential rain. Workers escaped without fatalities, though dozens suffered minor injuries as they sought shelter behind heavy machinery.
The Porto Feliz facility opened in 2016 with a 580 million-real investment and supplies 108 000 engines annually for Corolla, Corolla Cross and Yaris models.
Because Toyota relies on just-in-time delivery, the damage cut off engines to its Sorocaba and Indaiatuba assembly plants. Consequently, those plants suspended production immediately, affecting nearly 3 000 assembly-line workers.
Toyota will seek temporary engine supplies from overseas plants. However, executives warn that restoring the Porto Feliz site could take months. The company postponed its October launch of the Yaris Cross until it secures reliable engine flow.
Meanwhile, Toyota and its workforce negotiated a temporary layoff plan. The automaker proposed maintaining all employment contracts and benefits while suspending pay. Sorocaba workers voted on this plan from September 25 to 28 under union oversight.
The storm also battered São Paulo state. Officials declared a state of emergency in Porto Feliz after schools and a nursing home lost roofs. Power outages hit 600 000 addresses across the metropolitan area, though crews restored electricity by nightfall.
Brazil's auto industry had delivered a 6 percent production gain to 1.74 million vehicles through August and a 55.9 percent jump in exports. Yet this shutdown threatens that growth.
It underscores how single-site reliance and extreme weather can stall production and reshape market dynamics worldwide.
