India Launches Agni-Prime Missile
(MENAFN) India successfully carried out the launch of the Agni-Prime intermediate-range missile utilizing a rail-mounted mobile launcher, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh announced on Thursday.
Describing the missile as next-generation, Singh noted in a post on X that it has a range of up to 2,000 km (1,242 miles) and comes equipped with advanced capabilities.
“The first-of-its-kind launch carried out from specially designed Mobile Launcher, the missile has the capability to move on rail network without any pre-conditions that allows user to have cross country mobility and launch within a short reaction time with reduced visibility,” he explained.
Singh highlighted that this successful test positions India among a select set of nations able to deploy canisterized missiles from a rail-mobile platform.
The Agni missile series is developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization, India’s primary government body in charge of designing and producing weapons systems.
In August, India also successfully tested the Agni-5, a nuclear-capable ballistic missile that can be launched from mobile platforms.
With a range of up to 5,000 km, it is capable of striking targets across much of Asia and extending into parts of Europe.
The South Asian country is striving for self-sufficiency in defense technology. It has recently carried out several key missile trials, including the subsonic Nirbhay cruise missile, which has a strike range of 1,000 km and is considered a significant addition to India’s missile inventory alongside the supersonic BrahMos cruise missile, co-developed with Russia.
