Mexico declares rebellion against US
(MENAFN) Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has condemned US President Donald Trump’s allegations that Mexico is failing to combat illegal migration and drug trafficking. She accused the US of contributing to cartel violence by allowing powerful firearms to flow into Mexico, fueling the activities of criminal organizations. Sheinbaum’s remarks came as she announced retaliatory tariffs on US goods in response to Trump’s decision to impose a 25% duty on imports from Mexico and Canada.
Sheinbaum rejected the White House’s claims that Mexico has alliances with criminal groups, asserting that the real issue lies in the United States’ arms trade, which supplies cartels with military-grade weapons. She pointed to a recent report by the US Department of Justice highlighting the flow of firearms from the US to Mexico’s cartels.
The Mexican president also highlighted her administration’s efforts to combat drug trafficking, noting that Mexican forces had seized over 40 tons of drugs, including significant amounts of fentanyl, and arrested thousands of people connected to organized crime.
In response to the new tariffs, which are set to take effect on February 4, Sheinbaum ordered the Ministry of Economy to implement retaliatory measures aimed at protecting Mexico’s interests. While the specifics have not been revealed, it is expected that Mexico will target key US industries such as agriculture. Sheinbaum also called for closer cooperation between the two countries to address the drug crisis, emphasizing the need for mutual respect and shared responsibility.
