(MENAFN- Khaama Press) The Rakhshana media outlet has reported a case of sexual assault against an Afghan woman in Tehran as part of ongoing harassment of migrants in various parts of Iran.
In a report published on Saturday, February 1st, the media outlet quoted the victim of the assault, who claimed that Iranian judicial authorities refused to register her complaint for further investigation.
According to the report, on January 16th of this year, a woman named Masouma, a pseudonym, was returning from her daughters' workplace when she was picked up by an Iranian man. She was then taken to a remote desert area and sexually assaulted.
Masouma alleged that when she went to a police station in Tehran shortly after the assault, her complaint was not filed due to her lack of legal residency documents.
A legal expert in Iran, considering the structure of the Iranian judicial system, stated that it's possible Masouma's case may not only be ignored by Iran's judicial and security institutions, but it could also put her at risk of forced deportation.
The media identified the sexual assault victim as a 38-year-old Afghan migrant athlete, who fled Afghanistan two years ago after being threatened and detained by the Taliban. She was sexually assaulted by an Iranian man on January 16th of this year.
A large number of Afghan migrants, particularly women and girls, fled Afghanistan after the Taliban's return to power and have settled in neighboring countries like Iran and Pakistan. However, these migrants have been subjected to various forms of abuse over the past three years.
The situation highlights the grave challenges faced by Afghan refugees in Iran, where they are often vulnerable to exploitation, abuse, and discrimination. The lack of legal status exacerbates their difficulties in seeking justice or protection.
International human rights organizations have called for greater attention to the plight of Afghan migrants and the need for stronger protections against violence and abuse, urging Iran and other host countries to improve the legal and social conditions for refugees.
