Turkish airspace accommodates 2.3 million flights in 2024

(MENAFN) According to official data compiled by Anadolu, Turkish airspace accommodated 2.3 million flights in 2024, with more than half a million of these being overflights. This represents a 5.5 percent increase compared to the previous year, meaning there was an average of one flight every 14 seconds in Turkish skies. The data from the State Airports Authority Directorate underscores the growth in the volume of air traffic in Turkey, highlighting its significance as a global air hub.

Since 2002, the number of countries with which Turkey has air transportation agreements has more than doubled, growing from 81 to 175. In addition, the number of international destinations served by Turkish airlines has risen significantly, from 60 destinations in 50 countries to 349 destinations in 132 countries. This expansion reflects Turkey's increasing influence in the global aviation market.

By the end of 2024, domestic flights totaled 902,078, while international flights reached 866,779. Overall, commercial flights accounted for 1.4 million of the total air traffic. These figures demonstrate the importance of Turkey's air transportation system both for domestic and international connectivity.

Abdulkadir Uraloglu, Turkey’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, attributed the success of the country's aviation sector to its strategic geographical and cultural location at the crossroads of continents and civilizations. He also noted that the number of active airports in Turkey had risen from 26 in 2002 to 58 in 2024. With significant investments over the past two decades, Turkey now boasts the widest flight network in the world, giving it access to 1.5 billion people and a combined GDP of USD51.2 trillion within a four-hour flight radius.
