Turkish tourism sector revenues climb 8.3 percent in 2024

(MENAFN) Türkiye's tourism sector reached new heights in 2024, with revenues climbing 8.3 percent year-on-year to a record USD61.1 billion. This marks the highest level of tourism earnings in the country's history. According to the Turkish Statistical Institute, Türkiye welcomed 62.2 million visitors in 2024, reflecting a 9 percent increase compared to the previous year. The growth in visitor numbers contributed significantly to the rise in tourism revenue.

On average, visitors spent USD972 each in total during their stay in Türkiye, with expenditures amounting to USD97 per night. A large portion of visitors, about 64.9 percent, came for travel, entertainment, sporting, and cultural activities, underlining the country's appeal as a diverse tourist destination. This growth also played a key role in supporting the broader economy, especially by contributing to employment opportunities, particularly for young people.

In addition to the influx of foreign visitors, the number of Turkish citizens traveling abroad increased by 2.9 percent in 2024, reaching 11.4 million. This growth further highlights the dynamic state of tourism and travel in Türkiye. Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz praised the strong performance, noting that it exceeded the targets set in the Medium Term Program and helped revitalize economic activity.

Looking ahead, Yilmaz expressed optimism for 2025, targeting a further increase in tourism revenues to USD63.6 billion. He emphasized that the positive impact of the tourism sector on the economy, including its role in reducing the current account deficit and supporting disinflation policies, would continue into the new year.
