(MENAFN) A regional plane collided midair with a military helicopter and crashed into the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday evening, according to authorities. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that a PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet collided with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter while approaching Runway 33 at Reagan Washington National Airport around 9 PM local time.
The plane, which was operated by American Airlines, had departed from Wichita, Kansas, and was on its way to Washington, D.C. The FAA confirmed that the flight was American Eagle Flight 5342. The aircraft, operated by PSA Airlines, was a CRJ-700 regional jet. American Airlines released a statement confirming that 60 passengers and four crew members were on board during the incident.
The helicopter involved in the collision was a Sikorsky H-60, a military aircraft, and was also approaching the airport when the collision occurred.
