Amman, Jan. 30 (Petra) – The Higher Council for Science and technology has approved funding for three research projects under the second phase of the Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Region (PRIMA) European Union program, allocating €323,800 for the upcoming research cycle.
In a statement issued Thursday, the council announced that the funding includes two projects led by the Royal Scientific Society in the fields of food and agriculture, while the third project, focusing on water management, is overseen by the Water, Irrigation, and Environment Management Association. As the designated funding body for Jordanian researchers in the second phase of PRIMA, the council plays a key role in supporting national research initiatives.
Secretary-General of the Higher Council, Mashhour Rifai, urged the supported institutions and researchers to contribute to strengthening the national economy through their projects. He highlighted that Jordan, as a member of a 19-country coalition, is engaged in a regional initiative to develop and apply joint scientific research to address critical challenges related to sustainable food production and water security in the Mediterranean region.
Rifai noted that the National Agricultural Research Center and the Mira Foundation secured €800,000 in funding to implement three research projects in water, food, and agricultural systems under the first phase of PRIMA, which the European Union supports. He encouraged greater participation from Jordanian institutions in future program cycles to enhance research contributions in vital sectors linked to national development.
Since joining the PRIMA program in 2017, Jordan has secured funding for 27 collaborative research projects, amounting to approximately €5.1 million. The government has entrusted the Higher Council for Science and Technology with renewing the agreement until 2027.
