X gender option gets suspended in US passports

(MENAFN) The US State Department has suspended processing passport applications that select "X" as a gender identifier, reversing a 2022 policy that allowed non-binary, intersex, and gender-nonconforming individuals to use this marker. This change follows President Donald Trump's executive order limiting gender recognition to only male and female, with no allowance for changes in gender designation.

A State Department spokesperson confirmed the suspension, stating that future passports would reflect individuals' biological sex as defined by the new order. For those who already have passports with the 'X' gender marker, the department said further guidance would be provided soon. Reports indicated that existing 'X' passports would remain valid under the new policy.

The shift aligns with Trump's broader agenda to dismantle certain diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies, which have affected both government and private sectors. Several corporations, including Meta and Walmart, have scaled back or eliminated DEI initiatives in response to changing policies. Civil rights groups have signaled their intention to challenge the orders legally and publicly.
