KABUL (Pajhwok): The Afghanistan cricket Board (ACB) has extended Jonathan Trott's contract as head coach of the national squad for 2025.

England's former right-handed batter's contract was extended after his successful 2.5-year tenure, during which he made significant contributions to the team's progress and development, ACB said.

In a statement, the board said the national squad had made great strides over the last two years and Trott was part of the achievements, notably during the ICC ODI Cricket World Cup, where Afghanistan secured impressive victories against formidable opponents such as England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Netherlands.

Afghanistan qualified to ICC Champions Trophy for the first time, which will be held in February 2025 in Pakistan.

The national squad also won five matches at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in 2024, triumphing over strong teams like New Zealand, Australia and Bangladesh.

They reached the semifinals of the event for the first time in their cricketing history, and Jonathan Trott contributed well to this journey.

Afghanistan are currently in Zimbabwe for an all-format series featuring three T20Is, three ODIs and two Test matches.

During the tour, Jonathan Trott will accompany the squad only in ODIs. He will be unavailable for the T20Is and Test matches due to his personal commitments.

Hamid Hassan will step in and take on the role of head coach in Trott's absence.

The first T20 is scheduled for December 11, while the second and third fixtures will take place on December 13 and 14 respectively at the Harare Sports Club.

The first ODI is slated for December 17, the second for December 19 and the third for December 21.
