Turkish, UK, NATO officials discuss rising tensions in Syria

(MENAFN) Turkish Chief of General Staff Metin Gurak held a phone conversation with his British counterpart Tony Radakin on Sunday to talk about the situation in Syria, according to the Turkish Armed Forces.

In a separate discussion, Gurak and NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe Christopher Cavoli also reviewed the recent events in Syria.

Fighting erupted between forces loyal to the Assad Regime and anti-regime militias on November 27 in rural areas to the west of Aleppo, a key northern Syrian city.

On November 30, anti-regime factions seized control of much of Aleppo’s city center from regime troops, and on the same day, they took full control of Idlib province. Last Thursday, after intense fighting, these groups captured Hama’s city center from government forces.

Opposition groups also took control of several towns in Homs, a strategically vital province that serves as a route to the capital, Damascus, and began pushing forward there.

On Friday, rebel forces launched an offensive in Daraa province, located on Syria's border with Jordan, and retook the city center after fighting with regime forces.
