Cairo Welcomes Lebanon Ceasefire, Urges Regional De-Escalation

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) CAIRO, Nov 27 (KUNA) -- Egypt on Wednesday welcomed the ceasefire in Lebanon as a significant step towards regional de-escalation.
In a press release, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry underlined the significance of implementing UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution 1701 and enabling the Lebanese army to deploy in south Lebanon and impose its control over all Lebanese territories.
It also restated its call for respecting Lebanon's sovereignty, halting interference in its internal affairs and taking other necessary steps such as presidential elections.
The ministry, further, stressed that it is essential to stop the regional escalation since negotiations, dialogue, restoring rights and abidance by international law, international humanitarian law, international legitimacy, the UN Charter and UN resolutions are the sole way out of the regional crisis.
U.S. President Joe Biden said late Tuesday that Lebanon and the Israeli occupation had accepted a U.S. proposal to end "the devastating conflict" in Lebanon.
Under the deal, the fighting across the Lebanese border will end, and this ceasefire is designed to be a permanent cessation of hostilities.
The ceasefire in Lebanon came into effect early Wednesday. (end)
