Apple endorses Biden administration’s AI innovation commitments

(MENAFN) On Friday, Apple joined a series of major tech firms in endorsing the voluntary commitments for responsible artificial intelligence (AI) innovation set forth by the Biden administration. This move is part of President Joe Biden’s executive order issued nine months ago, aimed at positioning the United States as a leader in managing AI risks. The White House announced this development, highlighting that it aligns with broader efforts to ensure safe and secure AI development.

Previously, significant tech companies like Google and Microsoft signed onto these commitments in July 2023. In September, eight additional firms, including Adobe, IBM, and Nvidia, also pledged their support. These commitments reflect a growing consensus within the tech industry on the importance of addressing AI safety and security concerns.

The executive order directed federal agencies to undertake comprehensive actions over a 270-day period, including issuing critical safety guidelines and developing capabilities to test and evaluate AI technologies. According to the White House, all of the mandated actions were completed on schedule, demonstrating the administration’s commitment to timely and effective implementation of AI oversight measures.

Additionally, the Biden administration released the implementation roadmap for the National Standards Strategy for Critical and Emerging Technology on Friday. This roadmap emphasizes the need for active participation from both the private sector and public institutions in standardizing critical and emerging technologies. The goal is to safeguard national and economic security through robust standardization efforts, underscoring the administration’s focus on maintaining technological leadership and security.
