(MENAFN) Kenyan security forces successfully thwarted a terrorist attack in Garissa County near the Somali border on Saturday, killing two al-Shabab militants while others fled with injuries. According to a security report released that evening, the multi-agency security team, acting on intelligence, disrupted the planned assault in Alango, along the Garissa-Dadaab road.
The report detailed that the militants were preparing to strike from a hideout in a forested area south of Alango, awaiting the right moment to attack. However, the security forces intervened, killing two militants on the spot, while several others escaped, presumably injured.
During the operation, the forces recovered significant items from the hideout, including two AK-47 rifles, seven magazines, materials for making improvised explosive devices, and assorted food supplies. The security teams are now pursuing the fleeing militants in the border region, which has experienced a series of terrorist attacks in recent years.
The police have urged the public to assist by providing any information about the injured suspects. Since Kenya deployed troops to Somalia in 2011 to combat al-Shabab, the northeastern region has faced numerous grenade and gun attacks, resulting in many casualties, primarily among non-locals. The extremist group has since shifted tactics to abductions and using improvised explosive devices for attacks in coastal and northeastern areas.
