US imposes sanctions on entities in China backing North Korea's ballistic missile, space programs

(MENAFN) On Wednesday, the US Treasury Department announced a series of sanctions targeting multiple entities and individuals based in China for their involvement in supporting North Korea's ballistic missile and space programs. The sanctions were imposed on a network comprising six individuals and five entities from China, which are implicated in procuring items that bolster the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea's (DPRK) missile and space technology initiatives.

Despite ongoing violations of UN Security Council resolutions, including a recent failed attempt to launch a military satellite into orbit in late May, North Korea has continued its ballistic missile launches. Additionally, the DPRK has been supplying ballistic missiles to Russia, which has used these weapons in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine, impacting civilian areas and infrastructure. This support contributes to Russia’s sustained military actions against Ukraine.

Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson condemned North Korea’s continued development and proliferation of ballistic missile technologies, emphasizing that such actions are both irresponsible and destabilizing for the region and the global community. Nelson reaffirmed the US commitment to enforcing international sanctions by disrupting illicit procurement networks that support these technologies and holding accountable those involved in enabling such activities.

The sanctions reflect the broader US strategy to impede the DPRK’s missile programs and curb its ability to acquire and develop advanced weaponry, which threatens regional stability and international security. The Treasury Department's actions are part of ongoing efforts to address and counteract the proliferation of weapons technologies that defy established international norms and regulations.
