Extreme weather events in Ethiopia, China lead to significant losses

(MENAFN) On Tuesday, devastating landslides triggered by heavy rains in the Gofa region of southern Ethiopia have resulted in the deaths of at least 55 individuals, with ongoing relief efforts striving to manage the crisis. Daghmaoui Zerihoun, an official from the Gofa administrative region, indicated that while over 55 bodies have been recovered, the death toll could rise further as search operations continue.

In China, severe weather has also caused considerable destruction and loss of life. Heavy rains led to flooding and a partial bridge collapse, resulting in at least 25 fatalities. On Saturday night, floods inundated a village in Sichuan province, claiming the lives of 10 individuals and leaving 29 others missing. The swollen river in Xinhua Village, Hanyuan County, has swept away 40 houses, demolished bridges, and disrupted transportation.

Additionally, in northwestern Shaanxi province, part of a highway bridge collapsed late Friday, plunging vehicles into a rushing river and causing at least 15 deaths, according to state broadcaster CCTV. Meanwhile, Typhoon Prapiroon, the fourth typhoon of the year, made landfall on Tuesday along the coast of Wanning City on Hainan Island. With winds reaching up to 28 meters per second, the typhoon is expected to continue its northwest trajectory, bringing heavy winds and rain to Hainan and Guangdong provinces, as well as southern Guangxi region.
