Russian advance in Donetsk, interception of drones amid calls for negotiations

(MENAFN) Yesterday, Russian forces continued their push towards the town of New York in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, following their capture of the town of Yuryevka, situated just two kilometers to the south. The strategic importance of New York and Yuryevka is underscored by their proximity to Toretsk and the ongoing Russian efforts to consolidate control over the Donetsk region, which Russia has previously claimed as annexed. Since mid-June, these towns have been targeted by Russian strikes aimed at securing full dominance in the area.

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported a successful interception of 19 Ukrainian drones over various regions including Kursk, Belgorod, Crimea, and the Black Sea. The ministry disclosed that during the night before last, an attempted Ukrainian drone attack on Russian facilities was thwarted, with air defenses downing 11 drones in Kursk, three in Belgorod, and five over Crimea and the Black Sea.

Over the past week, Russian forces have executed 11 coordinated strikes on Ukrainian air bases, energy infrastructure, and air defense systems. The ministry's statement highlighted significant Ukrainian losses, including the surrender of 19 soldiers and the destruction of three MiG-29 fighters and 305 drones.

In parallel, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto emphasized the lack of a military resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, advocating for a negotiated settlement. Speaking on the sidelines of UN Security Council meetings, Szijjarto urged all parties involved to engage in discussions and seek a swift ceasefire, underlining the need for diplomatic efforts over continued military engagement.
