Iraq hits record wheat purchases, boosts food security

(MENAFN) The Iraqi Ministry of Trade announced on Sunday a historic achievement in the country's agricultural sector, with the purchase of 6.302 million tons of local wheat, the highest quantity ever recorded in Iraq's history, as reported by the Iraqi News Agency (INA). This milestone is part of a concerted effort by the ministry to support local production and enhance food security.

On July 6, an official disclosed to Reuters that Iraq had already acquired 5.9 million tons of local wheat since the start of the current harvest season in April. Haider Nouri Al-Karaawi, Director General of the Iraqi General Grain Trading Company, projected that the total volume of wheat purchases would reach approximately 6.3 million tons by the end of the season.

In early June, the Iraqi Ministry of Trade announced that it had achieved its marketing season objectives for the 2024 wheat crop. The ministry highlighted that the significant quantities of wheat marketed by local farmers had been crucial in attaining self-sufficiency in food security for the nation. This accomplishment marks a pivotal step towards bolstering Iraq's food security, underscoring the success of the ministry's agricultural and trade policies in promoting local production and reducing reliance on imports.

This record-breaking purchase of wheat is expected to enhance market stability and mitigate price fluctuations that could affect consumers. By achieving self-sufficiency in wheat, Iraq is poised to stabilize its food supply and improve its ability to sustainably meet the population's food needs. The ministry's efforts reflect a strategic approach to ensuring long-term food security and economic stability for the country.
