(MENAFN) On Saturday, Malaysia celebrated the coronation of Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar as its new king, a position primarily ceremonial yet increasingly significant in the nation's Political landscape. The 65-year-old Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar was officially crowned at a grand ceremony held at the National Palace in Kuala Lumpur. This follows his swearing-in as Malaysia's 17th monarch earlier this year in January.
The coronation event was attended by several notable figures, including King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, and Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei. Dressed in a traditional gold-trimmed coat and royal headdress, King Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar vowed to uphold the constitution, safeguard the Islamic faith, and ensure peace within Malaysia. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim extended his congratulations to the newly crowned king and reaffirmed his loyalty.
Although the role of the king is largely symbolic, its importance has grown in recent years due to Malaysia’s political instability. The king has played a pivotal role in appointing prime ministers on three separate occasions amid political divisions. Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar hails from a prominent and wealthy royal family in Johor, which maintains its own army.
Known for his outspoken nature, King Ibrahim Sultan has been an active critic of Malaysian politics and corruption. In addition to his royal duties, he engages in charitable work, including annual motorcycle tours on his Harley Davidson through Johor to distribute aid to the less fortunate. He is married and has six children.
