Media: number of Italians aged over 90 to reach 1M within next 3 years

(MENAFN) According to local media reports, the number of Italians aged over 90 is projected to reach one million within the next three years. This projection comes from Italia Longeva, a national association focused on aging and active longevity, which was established by the Ministry of Health. The state-run ANSA news agency highlighted that within a few years, approximately one-third of Italy's population will be over the age of 65, with many of these individuals living alone and facing the risk of social isolation.

This demographic shift raises significant concerns regarding the provision of home care services, as it is estimated that around six million elderly people will be living alone and vulnerable to isolation in the next two decades. Presently, a staggering 64 percent of individuals suffering from dementia—a leading cause of loss of autonomy among the elderly—are not receiving care in specialized socio-health facilities. This gap in care places an enormous burden on families, who often struggle to provide the necessary support for their loved ones.

The association has emphasized that the aging population, combined with an increase in age-related diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular issues, and dementia, necessitates a strengthening and expansion of home care services. Addressing these needs is crucial to ensuring that elderly individuals receive the care and support they require as they navigate the challenges associated with aging.
