China presents “Clear and Bright” online initiative targeting harmful content for children

(MENAFN) China has unveiled a new cyber initiative targeting video-sharing apps and social media networks accused of disseminating harmful content to children. The Cyberspace Administration of China announced the launch of a two-month campaign named “Clear and Bright,” aimed at significantly improving online protection for minors and cultivating a safer digital environment.

According to a statement from the regulator, the campaign will focus on rectifying major issues across various platforms including short video-sharing services, live streaming platforms, social networks, online retail sites, app stores, children's smart devices, and electronic devices designed for controlling applications used by minors. The objectives include tackling indecent commercial products, curbing the spread of content that could lead children into forming “dangerous relationships” or adopting “harmful values” conveyed through cyber slang and buzzwords used maliciously.

The initiative also aims to combat the dissemination of videos promoting school bullying, as well as content deemed “violent or gory” in cartoons or children's songs. It also targets the exploitation of child internet celebrities for financial gain.

Emphasizing the importance of vigilance towards emerging issues related to minors online, the Chinese agency highlighted the necessity of collaborative efforts to foster a positive online ecosystem.

This latest campaign coincides with the beginning of the summer school break and follows similar initiatives launched in previous years. In a parallel effort launched earlier in April, several prominent influencers were banned as part of a crackdown on individuals promoting “ostentatious” behavior and flaunting lavish lifestyles.
