Biden possibly to permit American contractors to operate in Ukraine

(MENAFN) The administration of United States President Joe Biden is reportedly leaning towards permitting American military contractors to engage in the maintenance and repair of weapons systems in Ukraine. According to a news agency, this potential policy shift is currently under review by United States officials and has not yet received final approval from President Biden, as indicated by sources familiar with the deliberations.

The move to allow contractors to deploy to Ukraine is viewed as a strategic measure aimed at bolstering Ukraine's military capabilities against Russia. Despite Biden's steadfast stance against deploying United States military forces directly to Ukraine, the administration has been increasingly involved in supporting Kiev, including supplying American tanks and long-range missiles—a departure from earlier assurances not to take such steps.

If implemented later this year, the lifting of restrictions on United States contractors operating within Ukraine would mark a significant escalation in United States involvement in the conflict, potentially enabling the Pentagon to enter into contracts with numerous American companies. These contracts could facilitate expedited repairs of United States -manufactured weapons systems utilized by Ukrainian forces.

Since the onset of the conflict in February 2022, Biden's administration has been intent on minimizing American exposure to frontline combat, a news agency noted. The White House's approach aims to mitigate risks to United States personnel while avoiding perceptions, particularly by Russia, of direct United States military engagement in the region.
