Biden gives poor performance at debate against Trump

(MENAFN) President Joe Biden's underwhelming performance in the 2024 presidential debate against Donald trump has alarmed top Democratic Party leaders and ignited public debate about his suitability as the party's nominee.

Following the debate, the Trump campaign quickly proclaimed victory, initiating fundraising efforts and expressing confidence in their prospects of reclaiming the White House, as well as gaining control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. This optimism is supported by recent polls: a CNN poll showed that 67 percent of viewers believed Trump outperformed Biden, compared to only 33 percent who favored Biden. Likewise, a New York Times survey of its opinion writers found that a mere 14 percent thought Biden did well, while 86 percent considered Trump the clear winner.

Vice President Kamala Harris acknowledged Biden's subpar performance, admitting that he had "a slow start." However, during an interview with CNN, she chose not to delve into specifics, instead urging Americans to focus on Biden's achievements and record compared to Trump’s.

Biden's troubles began just twelve minutes into the debate when he lost his train of thought, stumbled, paused, and stared at the ground. He seemed to recover momentarily but then shouted an incoherent phrase: "We have finally overcome medical care!" This disjointed performance sent shockwaves through the Democratic Party, causing widespread panic among members from all factions. Private conversations about Biden's ability to effectively face Trump quickly shifted from hopeful to concerned.

Biden's confused and unfocused debate showing has heightened doubts about his ability to defeat former President Donald Trump and to effectively participate in the next debate scheduled for the end of September. Additionally, questions are arising about his capacity to serve another four years as president.

Former Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri told MSNBC that Biden needed to reassure Americans of his competence despite his age but failed to do so. The debate about Biden's abilities is not new; for over a year, prominent Democratic strategists, including former Barack Obama adviser David Axelrod and former Bill Clinton adviser James Carville, have been privately raising concerns. However, the recent debate has brought these discussions into the public eye with increasing urgency.

Biden's lackluster performance has unified Democrats in their concern, and the focus has now shifted to whether Biden can sustain his campaign and effectively challenge Trump. The events of the debate night have underscored the critical importance of Biden's performance in the upcoming debates and his overall ability to lead the nation.
