Ex-American marine encounters another trail in Russia

(MENAFN) Russia has initiated a new legal trial for Robert Gilman, a former United States marine currently serving a prison term for assaulting a Police officer while intoxicated. According to reports from RIA Novosti, Gilman now faces additional charges of assaulting a prison official and a state investigator, as outlined in documents from the Central District Court of Voronezh.

The charges against Gilman allege multiple instances of assault, including incidents where he allegedly punched both a colony inspector and a state investigator. Prosecutors claim these assaults occurred in September and October 2023, resulting in injuries such as a concussion for the state investigator.

Following these incidents, Gilman was transferred to a pre-trial detention center, where further allegations state he struck an inspector during a personal search in November 2023.

The 30-year-old American has reportedly admitted guilt to these assaults but has raised unusual claims during the proceedings, including assertions of being poisoned with "radioactive material" and dismissing the trial's validity.

Gilman's legal troubles in Russia began in October 2022 when he was sentenced to 4.5 years in a Russian penal colony for an earlier incident involving a drunken attack on a police officer. The incident initially unfolded when authorities removed Gilman from a train in Voronezh in January 2022, following complaints from passengers about his intoxicated behavior during a journey from Sochi to Moscow. Reports indicate he resisted arrest, kicking a police officer, although Gilman stated he had no recollection of the event but expressed apologies to Russia and the police officer involved.
