EU, Ukraine ink security agreement

(MENAFN) Ukraine has finalized a significant security agreement with the European Union and entered into similar bilateral pacts with Lithuania and Estonia. According to a draft reviewed by Reuters, the agreement ensures ongoing military support from the European Union to Kiev.

Since 2023, Ukraine has expanded its security partnerships, securing agreements with several NATO member states including the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. Notably, these agreements do not commit the signatories to direct involvement in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

During a recent Council of Europe meeting, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky emphasized the importance of these agreements, stating, "Today, we, together with European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen, have signed a joint security commitment with the European Union." Zelensky further noted additional agreements signed with Lithuania and Estonia in collaboration with their respective leaders.

In a pre-meeting announcement on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Zelensky highlighted that the security agreement will secure comprehensive support from all 27 European Union Member States for Ukraine, irrespective of any internal changes.

This development comes amid tensions, with criticisms from some quarters regarding the West's reluctance to provide Ukraine with unequivocal security assurances.
