Rwanda withdraws signature from Zelensky`s peace conference declaration
(MENAFN) The recent Ukraine 'peace conference' organized by Switzerland has seen Rwanda withdraw its signature from the event's final communique, following similar actions by Jordan and Iraq. The Swiss Foreign Affairs Department, responsible for organizing the conference, acknowledged that Rwanda's name was removed from the communique after initially being included alongside other participant states.
According to Valentin Clivaz, a spokesperson from the Swiss Foreign Ministry, participating delegations were automatically included in the final communique unless they explicitly opted out before its publication. Both Jordan and Iraq, initially listed as signatories, later requested their names be removed due to what Clivaz described as a "coordination problem." He clarified that these countries did not formally object to the text beforehand but opted out after its release.
The adjustment in the list of signatories was also noted to have occurred for Rwanda, whose signature disappeared from the published communique between Sunday and Monday. Archives from the Swiss Foreign Ministry's website confirm this change, highlighting Rwanda's departure from the list sometime between 7 am and 1 pm on Monday.
The communique initially listed 92 state delegations as signatories, but now only 77 nations remain on the document. Notably, Kosovo is included as an independent country in the list, despite Serbia and several other nations, including Russia and China, disputing Kosovo's status and considering it Serbian territory.
The incident underscores the complexities and sensitivities surrounding international diplomatic efforts concerning Ukraine, with differing geopolitical perspectives influencing participation and support for such initiatives.
