IAEA Chief Announces Visit To Ukraine

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Director General of the International Atomic energy Agency Rafael Mariano Grossi will make a visit to Ukraine this summer during which he will travel to Kyiv and the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power plant and discuss further support for Ukraine.

Grossi said this in an interview with Ukrinform.

"As I have said, there should never be any kind of attack on... And this is part of the seven pillars and also the five concrete principles. There should never be an attack on a nuclear power plant or any piece of infrastructure that affects the safety components of the plant. So we hope this will not happen," Grossi said, commenting on the risks of a potential blackout of all Ukrainian nuclear power plants due to Russian strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

Grossi said he discussed this issue with Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko a few days ago and planned to continue the discussion during his visit to Ukraine this summer.

"I discussed a few days ago with Mr. Galushchenko. And in my next visit to Kyiv this summer, I'm planning to return to Kyiv and also to Zaporizhzhia, we decided to discuss in more detail how the Agency could support in this area," he said.

ZNPP has been under occupation since March 4, 2022. Over this time, the Russians repeatedly violated the principles of nuclear safety, placing military equipment at the nuclear station, mining its territory and terrorizing the personnel. The invaders ignore the IAEA's decision to return ZNPP to the control of Ukraine's Nuclear Energy Generating Company Energoatom.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal stated in March that over 150 gross violations of the operation of the nuclear power plant, each of which could be fatal, had been recorded within two years of Russia's occupation of the nuclear power plant.
