Some Missouri residents will soon be able to apply for property tax relief created by state legislation, Senate Bill 190, last year.
With the Missouri property tax relief for seniors, many counties, including Greene and Christian counties, crafted legislation to offer property relief.
The property tax relief for Greene and Christian counties will freeze future tax bills for eligible residents.
Property tax relief from Greene and Christian counties: Who is eligible?
This Missouri property tax relief for seniors from Greene and Christian counties is based on the state law that allows eligible seniors to freeze their future property tax bills at the amount they owe in the year when they become eligible.
The legislation will nullify any property tax in excess of the“frozen” portion of the bill, thereby allowing seniors to save some money.
Despite some confusion over the implementation of the legislation at the county level, Greene and Christian counties are moving forward with the legislation. Though a subsequent bill, Senate Bill 756, addresses the gaps left by SB 190, it still awaits approval from Gov. Mike Parson.
One major concern that SB 756 addresses is that it would make all seniors 62 and above eligible for the relief, rather than just those who qualify for Social Security benefits .
Once approved, SB 756 will go into effect in August, leaving little time for new eligible applicants to apply for the relief by September 30.
To qualify for the property tax relief from Greene and Christian counties, you must be eligible for Social Security retirement benefits, own a homestead or have an equitable interest in a homestead, and pay property tax on such homestead.
Also, the homestead must be a primary residence. It must be noted that a taxpayer can't claim the relief for more than one primary residence, and there is no limit to the property's assessed value.
