Armenia's Legislation Remains Obstacle To Peace Agreement With Azerbaijan - Elchin Amirbayov

(MENAFN- Trend News Agency) BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 24. Armenia's ownlegislation is still an obstacle to a peace agreement withAzerbaijan, said Elchin Amirbayov, Representative of the Presidentof the Republic of Azerbaijan on special assignments, in aninterview with BBC, Trend reports.

"Armenia has to efficiently deal with fundamentalincompatibility between their letter of spirit in the draft peaceagreement and its current legislation, including their constitutionthat suggests that Karabakh is part of Armenia. This is indeed aterritorial claim which needs to be addressed. Especially, afterPrime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on many occasions has confirmed thatKarabakh is Azerbaijan," he said.

Amirbayov also noted that the reason for the remainingchallenges in the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia isthe lack of trust.

"This is a cautious optimism. But today there is a uniquesituation because we never had the accompanying factors that mightlead to the peace process. Azerbaijan believes that, after we hadput an end to this illegal occupation of Karabakh and surroundingregions last September, our countries stand a real and uniquechance to strike a peace deal, because the most difficult challengeto peace, which is the illegal foreign military presence of Armeniain our territory, has been resolved. Today we have never been thatclose to peace," he pointed out.
