(MENAFN) As Cyclone Hamoon advances through the Bay of Bengal, several states in eastern India and coastal regions of Bangladesh are preparing for an onslaught of heavy rainfall. The "very severe cyclonic storm" is currently positioned approximately 400km from the Indian port city of Paradip in Odisha state, and about 550km south of Bangladesh, with landfall anticipated on Wednesday.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Hamoon has intensified, boasting wind speeds of up to 130KPH. The IMD's Director General, Mritunjay Mohapatra, noted that impacts are expected to commence in the afternoon, targeting the coast between Khepupara and Chittagong.
Already, the cyclone has delivered substantial rainfall to several Indian states, including Odisha, West Bengal, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, Manipur, and Assam. Coastal districts in West Bengal and Odisha have recorded 9cm and 5cm of rainfall, respectively. The precipitation is projected to intensify over Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, Manipur, and southern Assam throughout Tuesday into Wednesday.
Mr. Mohapatra cautioned that wind speeds of 40-50KPH are anticipated. He further indicated that while Hamoon will be classified as a cyclonic storm upon reaching Bangladesh, severe impacts are not expected. However, prolonged heavy rainfall is anticipated, accompanied by a tidal surge measuring between one to two meters.
Authorities in Odisha and West Bengal have taken preemptive measures, issuing evacuation orders for residents in low-lying areas, and advising fishermen to refrain from venturing out to sea.
