Arab, Muslim American feel surprised after Biden’s address on aid package

(MENAFN) In the wake of President Joe Biden's recent address, in which he called for a USD105 billion aid package primarily directed towards Israel and Ukraine, some members of the Arab and Muslim American communities have voiced feelings of surprise and disappointment. They highlight the absence of mention regarding U.S. citizens in Gaza, prompting concerns about their well-being amid the ongoing conflict.

Chicago resident Nabil Alshurafa, whose mother, Naela Elshorafa, is among an estimated 500-600 U.S. citizens in Gaza, expressed frustration. Elshorafa, a 66-year-old U.S. citizen of over 25 years, had traveled to Gaza to visit family prior to the outbreak of hostilities. She is currently residing with nearly 50 family members in a confined space.

In response, President Biden, during his return from Israel on October 18, expressed hope in facilitating the safe return of American citizens from Gaza. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also acknowledged the challenges faced by Gazans attempting to leave, emphasizing the role of Hamas in obstructing their movements. However, Alshurafa contends that the situation is more nuanced, recalling an incident where Israeli actions contributed to the difficulty in leaving Gaza. He argues that earlier intervention could have prevented the current predicament.

Alshurafa draws attention to what he perceives as a disparity in efforts to assist citizens in different locations. He points out that while U.S. citizens in Israel were aided in leaving, those in Gaza, including Palestinian Americans who hold U.S. citizenship, continue to face dire circumstances, contending with both scarcity of resources and the threat of violence. This discrepancy in treatment raises questions about equity and fairness.

The State Department responded, underscoring the paramount importance of the safety of U.S. citizens abroad. While citing privacy constraints in discussing specific cases, the department assured that concerted efforts, in collaboration with Egypt and Israel, are underway to facilitate the departure of U.S. citizens and their immediate family members from Gaza.
